FaithAction and the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Faith and Society hosted an event in Westminster on Monday 14th November, at the start of Inter Faith Week. The Faith in Local Government reception celebrated the Faith Covenant developed by the APPG, for which FaithAction is the secretariat. Our keynote speaker was the Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, who was vocal in his support of faith, describing it as “undoubtedly a force for good in our country”. He also expressed how impressed he was with FaithAction’s Creative English programme, and committed to supporting faith-led initiatives in the future.
Our other speakers were the Rt Hon Stephen Timms MP, Chair of the APPG, FaithAction’s very own Daniel Singleton, Cllr Waseem Zaffar of Birmingham City Council, Cllr Mohammed Iqbal of Leeds City Council, and Trevor Alexander, Vice Chair of Barnet-Multi Faith Forum.
FaithAction and the APPG are calling on all local authorities and faith groups across the UK to adopt the Faith Covenant, thereby unlocking a powerful resource to meet increasing social need. Six local authorities have already done so – from the north to south of the country, in cities and counties – committing to work together within a set of principles that guide engagement.
